14 February is well-known as Valentine’s day as it is celebrated in many countries around the world. The day is connected with St Valentine of Rome who became was a martyr at the time when the country was under the reign of Claudius II, that is around the third century AD. The man risked his life for lovers’ feelings. To him we owe this unique holiday celebrating love and affection of people who are in relationships, but also Valentine’s day is for singles.
The day is commemorated in many countries for hundreds of years. The way 14 February is celebrated has changed slightly since the time of its beginning. Valentines in the past looked quite different than nowadays. Years ago the day was only connected with sending valentine’s cards, which were hand-made, often of real lace and ribbons, with beautiful poems invented specially for the occasion and for the person who was to receive such a card.
Today, however, the day, and thus the gifts, look differently. Our century is much concerned with money and business, that is why also 14 February became, to a large extent, a commercial St. Valentine day. Long before Valentine’s Day we are exposed to advertisements, commercials, and the general hype of the media about the day. Many argue that it has become too much commercialised and that is how the day lost something of its true importance – celebration of the real feeling of people. Nevertheless, we still enjoy preparing for the day and celebrating it with our beloved.
There are many ways of celebrating this holiday. Most often, we ourselves decide on how we want to spend this particular occasion. However, some of the ideas are already proven and repeated year after year. One of them is going on a date to a fancy restaurant or sending valentine card. To be precise, sending valentine cards is the most popular activity on that day and thus, the most common gift.
